Wu Style Tai Chi Chuan Curriculum - (cont.)
Our program starts with the complete slow form or Gah Ghee. This is a step-by-step form where each posture (all 108) is done slow enough to chase an ant. Done properly it will take 45 minutes to perform the whole form completely. When this is performed sufficiently a student learns the fast form or Goon Chuan. The postures are basically the same as Gah Ghee but done in an eight minute pace.
Push Hands is very key to Tai Chi Chuan because here is where one starts to develop 'listening'(sensitivity to ones opponents movements) and rooting (when not moving, one should be immovable like a mountain). It also is the start of learning actual application. The techniques are performed without the use of power or strength. This is when higher levels of Tai Chi Chuan are achieved. It also becomes highly effective as self-defense.
Weapons such as the Gim (straight sword) and Don Do (saber) are next in the process. They are a means of teaching the extension of the chi even beyond ones physical reach.
